Autumn Racing Carnival - what’s your style?
Racing season is a time to don your finest suit, polish your shoes and reach for the pocket square; a perfect occasion to express your most sartorial self. There are few restrictions, but elegance is the aim of any race day event. Autumn racing is no time to dress like you have rushed out of the office; however you need not match your outfit to the hue of your partner’s head piece. A flash of colour is fabulous, but avoid looking like a child’s birthday cake – it’s all about balance.

In planning your outfit I suggest a light charcoal or navy soft-shouldered suit; our Uptown Sharkskin and Washington Twill are two wonderful options. Whatever shade you choose, the cut is everything. Pop into one of our stores to discuss how a suit should fit. Tips: the shoulders should not be too wide and, although the length of your trouser is more subjective, there are still right and wrong ways to go about it.
Pair your tailored suit with a coloured gingham shirt and knitted tie, or opt for a classic white Herringbone weave shirt with a wonderful silk number. The pocket square is an indulgent bit of fun, not really needing to match anything, but a chance to complement your winning combination.
Finally, the shoes. In my opinion, the most important factor to finish any outfit. Avoid anything white, pointed, and anything that becomes higher at the tip. As you’re not in a corporate environment, you have the freedom to wear those tassel loafers or monk straps you treated yourself to and have been dying to wear.
Good luck and do pop into our stores this racing season for advice from our perfectly chosen staff.
